With the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 beats the Galaxy Z Flip’s older Snapdragon 855 Plus chip. But the larger notification display and the 120Hz refresh rate certainly make the Galaxy Z Flip 3 more appealing than its predecessor. In short, it’s a case of evolution not revolution in terms of design between Flip generations. There's Gorilla Glass Victus on the new phone's chassis, too. The new Flip also comes with Armour Aluminium, which is “the strongest aluminum ever used on a smartphone,” according to Samsung. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 comes with IPX8 water resistance, which means it should survive a dunk in water more readily than the Galaxy Z Flip, which had no water resistance rating to speak of. There's an additional key difference between the two phones but it's not visible to the naked eye. ![]() The Lavender finish is particularly striking and offers a glossier take on the attractive Phantom Violet seen on the Samsung Galaxy S21. Despite being one of the best-known types of vulnerabilities, they still commonly appear in applications: they can be very difficult to detect, and even “safe” code can be exploited if an integer overflow vulnerability exists as well. Protecting against buffer overflow vulnerabilitiesīuffer overflow vulnerabilities can be very dangerous, as demonstrated by their high rank in the CWE list. Even if the developer has done their math correctly, an integer overflow vulnerability can enable an attacker to write a value greater than the intended length. A wrong value in the length argument for strncpy will still allow exploitation of a buffer overflow vulnerability. This is because they assume that the developer has correctly specified the length of the data that they wish to have written to the buffer. However, these are not a perfect solution to the problem. Functions like strncpy and strncat take an argument specifying the length of the input that they should copy over and will stop when they reach a null terminator or the maximum length, whichever is sooner. The simplest way to mitigate buffer overflow vulnerabilities is to avoid the use of unbounded write operators. ![]() A malicious user can use this to overwrite the function return address - or other important variable values - and impact the operation of the program. ![]() They don’t know or care how long an allocated buffer is and will happily write beyond its boundaries if they don’t hit a null terminator. These operators are designed to read data into a buffer until they reach a null terminator. Most buffer overflow vulnerabilities boil down to the use of unbounded read or copy operators like strcpy and strcat in C++. This typically is only an issue when dealing with user-controlled data. Buffer overflow vulnerabilitiesīuffer overflow vulnerabilities are created when the developer does not account for and control the potential case where the allocated buffer is not large enough to hold the data that is to be placed in it. As long as the data fits in the allocated variable buffer, then everything works out. When placing data on the stack, a developer can allocate a variable with a set size to hold that data and then fill it with data. If an attacker can rewrite the function return address, they can control the execution flow of the program and potentially convince it to run attacker-controlled malicious code. As shown, a function’s stack includes function arguments/parameters, local variables and the function’s return address. The image above shows a sample program stack. It grows when new values are added to the top of it, like a stack of papers (hence the name). The stack is a region of memory where a program can store values for later use. While both of these can be the victim of buffer overflow attacks, stack-based ones are the best place to begin. When a program is running, this “somewhere” is either the stack or the heap. ![]() Every piece of data on a computer that is used by a program has to be stored somewhere. ![]() In a mixing bowl – or directly in the medium-sized saucepan you’ll be cooking the filling in – stir together the diced apples, lemon juice, granulated sugar, and brown sugar. ![]() In the meantime, start on the filling so it has time to cool to room temperature before assembly. Divide that bowl into two even parts, shape those into discs, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate them for at least two hours. Pour in the ice water and continue pulsing just until a dough has formed – don’t let it pull into a ball – as soon as you start being able to see large gaps between the coarse crumbs as they congeal, stop processing. Transfer the dough to a clean work surface and form it into a ball with your hands. Add the flour, sugar, and frozen butter to the bowl of your food processor.* Pulse the ingredients together in 2-second pulses until combined – the mixture should resemble coarse crumbs. Dissolved into the aforementioned cold water it’ll serve as a thickener for the filling. I like to roll the crust out on a surface dusted with both flour and a pinch of cinnamon for appearances and a hint of that extra flavor. Ground cinnamon, ground ginger, ground nutmeg, fine sea salt: Spices for our filling! Only a pinch of ginger and nutmeg, as cinnamon is the star.Adds brightness to the filling so it’s not just sweet and cinnamon. Lemon juice: Freshly squeezed, please.Granny Smith apples: Green apples! Don’t use red! Too soft! Too much moisture! If you don’t like ‘tart’ apples just add a bit more sugar: we need the texture of granny smiths or another tart apple or else you’ll end up with a 90s Apple Pie full of applesauce.Make sure the ice water is actually ice water – we want to keep the butter cold as we process the dough so the crust is flaky. Ice water, cold water: Ice water for the crust, cold water for the cornstarch slurry.Granulated sugar, dark brown sugar, turbinado sugar: White sugar in the crust and the filling, brown sugar in the filling to add some caramel notes and deepen the color, and turbinado sugar just for sprinkling on top.The crust for these 90s Apple Pies will be flavorless without it! Salted butter: If you choose to use unsalted you’ll want to add a teaspoon or so of fine sea salt to your flour.All-purpose flour: For the pastry (pie) dough.Feel free to jump to the full recipe, but here are useful notes about the ingredients you will need to make this 90s Apple Pies recipe: ![]() In the case of court cards, this entailed cutting off the lower half of the image and replacing it with an inverted copy of the top half usually, but not always, with a horizontal or sloping dividing line between the two halves. During the 19th century, card manufacturers began designing double-headed cards so that the cards could be readily identified whichever way up they were. Germany uses A, K, D and B ( Ass, König, Dame and Bube) Russia uses the Cyrillic letters Т, К, Д and В ( Tuz, Korol, Dama and Valet) Sweden uses E, K, D and Kn ( Ess, Kung, Dam and Knekt) and France uses 1, R, D, V ( As, Roi, Dame, and Valet).Īll early playing cards were single headed (also called single ended). Modern playing cards carry index labels on opposite corners or in all four corners to facilitate identifying the cards when they overlap and so that they appear identical for players on opposite sides. There are also numerous others such as the Berlin pattern, Nordic pattern, Dondorf Rhineland pattern (pictured right) and the variants of the European pattern. The second most common is the Belgian-Genoese pattern, which was designed in France for export and spread to Spain, Italy, the Ottoman Empire, the Balkans and much of North Africa and the Middle East. The most popular standard pattern of the French deck is the English pattern (pictured above), sometimes referred to as the International pattern or Anglo-American pattern. Main article: French-suited playing cards The Jokers can also be used as replacements for lost or damaged cards. In addition, commercial decks often include anywhere from one to six (most often two or three since the mid-20th century) Jokers, often distinguishable with one being more colourful than the other, as some card games require these extra cards. Each pip card displays the number of pips (symbols of the suit) corresponding to its number, as well as the appropriate numeral (except "A" for the Ace) in at least two corners. The card with one pip is known as an Ace. Each suit also includes ten numeral cards or pip cards, from one (Ace) to ten. Each suit includes three court cards (face cards), King, Queen and Jack, with reversible ( double-headed) images. In other regions, such as Spain and Switzerland, the traditional standard pack comprises 36, 40 or 48 cards.Ī standard 52-card French-suited deck comprises 13 ranks in each of the four suits: clubs ( ♣), diamonds ( ♦), hearts ( ♥) and spades ( ♠). The second most common is the Belgian-Genoese pattern, designed in France, but whose use spread to Spain, Italy, the Ottoman Empire, the Balkans and much of North Africa and the Middle East. The most common pattern of French-suited cards worldwide and the only one commonly available in Britain and the United States is the English pattern pack. In English-speaking countries it is the only traditional pack used for playing cards in many countries of the world, however, it is used alongside other traditional, often older, standard packs with different suit systems such as those with German-, Italian-, Spanish- or Swiss suits.
